Today, I staffed the reference desk. The major question of the day was removing and adding music to an MP3 player. This was easier than I expected, as the files could be easily accessed and deleted/added accordingly and did not require special software like iTunes. Requiring such software can be a barrier for those without home computers or access to the internet. Libraries aren’t able to provide every specialized software devices, as this opens up computer to viruses and other malware. The digital divide can take many forms and while libraries can help with access and training, we cannot solve everything.
