Today, I staffed the reference desk and continued to work on the signage report. Part of the evening was spent trying out a new video game, ARMS, on the library’s Nintendo Switch console. Beth purchased the Switch in the hopes it would generate teen traffic to the library. Such programs and services have become more common in libraries. My own employer offers regular video game programs for kids and has a circulating video game collection. One of the survey questions asked what consoles patrons owned. Video games are expensive, regularly costing $50-60 per game, which is inaccessible to many. Circulating video games has its risks, but it also opens up access, which is, after all, our business.
