Week 6 & 7 Update

Even when I scale back to weekly updates, I’m a lazy blogger.

Chapter 15
Last Monday, I spent an hour on the floor talking with Megan, the Adult librarian in charge of local history. Currently, she and some volunteers are scanning and organizing pictures of all of the library’s branches – some date back to the 1920s! I had to use gloves to handle the photos, which vary from children’s programs to documenting renovations.

Afterwards, I went to the Library Board Meeting. A 7-person board along with the Director, Deputy Director and Fiscal Officer (working on hiring a new one) help govern the library. It was an interesting process to observe – I recognized a lot of the language from my time in 4-H.

Chapter 16
Last Wednesday I was at Lee bright and early (8 am) for the Matchmakers meeting. The Matchmakers are the readers’ advisors for the library. The first half of the meeting was devoted to administrative details. The second was just each person discussing the books they’d read lately.

After that, I visited Collection Services (Technical Services in most other libraries). They’re the ones who make sure books are properly labelled and cataloged – they keep the library running smoothly. As a patron, you don’t really think about all the behind-the-scenes things that go on. It was interesting
